הזירה, עמותה שלא למטרות רווח, יוסדה ע"י מריו קוטליאר ז"ל בשנת 1988 תחת השם "הבמה" שכללה שלושה גופים:
תיאטרון לילדים – הקרון, בית הספר לתיאטרון חזותי, הבמה – תיאטרון בין תחומי.
בסוף 1999 הוחלט על ידי העמותה לפרקה ולייסד שלושה גופים נפרדים. הזירה הבין תחומית נרשמה כעמותה אצל רשם העמותות ביום 16 בדצמבר 1999 והחלה פעילותה ביום 1 בינואר 2000.

תחת שמי הדמדומים של אמנויות הפרפורמנס לכובע של הזירה שלש פינות: אנחנו נותנים במה לתכנים מקוריים ואישיים, נותנים גב לאמנים בתחילת דרכם, וחותרים לרמה מקצועית ואמנותית גבוהה על פי כל קנה מידה. הזירה מציגה מופעי תיאטרון, מחול, מוזיקה, וידאו-ארט, שירה, מיצגים ותערוכות מתחלפות בגלריה "ונטה". התכנית השוטפת מורכבת מהפקות מקור, מופעים מתארחים והפקות עצמאיות שהזירה מאמצת. במהלך השנה מעלה הזירה שלושה פסטיבלים: "קולה של המילה" העוסק במילה הכתובה וביטויה באמנות הבין-תחומית, "זירת מחול", ופסטיבל המוזיקה "לילות קיץ".
האירועים מתקיימים במשכנה החדש של הזירה, אולם ליאו מודל המחודש שבמרכז ז'ראר בכר. גלריה ונטה שוכנת במשרדי הזירה שבתלפיות.
הזירה נתמכת ע"י: משרד המדע, התרבות והספורט [מנהל התרבות], עיריית ירושלים, - האגף לתרבות, הקרן לירושלים ומועצת הפיס לתרבות ואמנות,.

Hazira – (Hebrew for "The Arena") – was established in Jerusalem in 1988 by a group of performing artists as a stage for any kind of interdisciplinary artistic activity. At the time, it was part of a triangle that consisted of The Train Puppet theatre and the School for Visual Arts.

Nowadays it functions as an independent small theatre with a yearly budget of about 750,000$, that mounts four festivals annually:
• Voice of the Word – an interdisciplinary festival that has texts as its focus
• Dance Arena – a dance festival that mounts premiers by young choreographers
• A Music festival called Summer Nights
• An alternative-cinema festival together with the Jerusalem Cinemateque

On top of that Hazira produces two full scale theatre productions every year, operates an art gallery with changing exhibitions, and hosts an impressive array of fringe and alternative performing arts events.

Hazira maintains a close relationship with all the Arts Academies in Jerusalem and develops works of outstanding graduates.

Hazira was headed originally by a painter, then by a choreographer, and lately it is being run by one of the best known figures of the Israeli theatre, an actor with a 30 years career of initiating and mounting some of the most artistically (as well as politically) controversial productions that the theatrical establishment in Israel found itself producing, a guy who collaborated with directors such as Robert Woodruff (NY), Steve Berkoff (London), and Krystian Lupa (Krakow) on most of the main theatre stages in this country.

Hazira shall welcome any kind of collaboration with any institute or group with a similar artistic agenda. It has a small, young, compact and extremely efficient and professional production team and curators, and about 20,000 spectators of all ages go through its doors every year. So – for any idea –
