Hazira Performance Art Dance Festival will take place at the end of this month with several premieres and performances at the Khan Theater compound in Jerusalem. |
Dancing Through All Senses |
|
|
Hazira’s artists invite the audience to cross the line separating the viewer from the performer:
Audience members will become wedding guests, participating in a bacchanalia of wine and dance, experience a polyphonic chaos orchestrated by Michal Oppenheim. In a place where the boundary between real life and “performance” is unclear, participants will move around in the event space, blindfolded, and find out, via a live “reality program,” what is taking place in an artist’s mind …
Again and again the audience will find itself invited to take an active part in the performance, to react to it, and to discover just how unexpected the encounter can be when the audience has suddenly been given “license” to act independently.
This is the third year in a row that Hazira Performance Art will be holding its Dance Festival, giving center stage to young artists in the fields of dance, installation and performance arts.
The premiere performances, which have been created especially for the Festival, are designed to raise questions about the nature of the relationship between the audience and the performer: what mutual need does the theatrical event address? What is it that we are seeing? What do we feel? And what is it that the audience takes home from the performance? In some of the works to be presented, the artists conduct an ongoing dialogue with the audience which dictates the performance’s nature and direction.
After the main performance, at the end of each evening, a dance party will be held, with audience participation, in the Khan courtyard, with some of Israel’s most outstanding dance artists: the Israeli Breakdance Organization ensemble; bellydancer Yael Moav, and Shiri Wild and her flamenco dancing ensemble.
Hazira Performance Art nurtures young performance and dance artists working in a wide variety of fields, including theater, music, video and dance, while enabling the audience to experience the Jerusalem cultural scene and to take part in it's ongoing activity.

"Symbol of Ascent" – premiere
Creator/Dancer : Maya Levi
Dancer/Collaborator : Karin Lederman
Design : Lishai Levron
Thanks to : The School of Visual Theater, Gili Gaudiano, Eran Cohen.
The tension between ascent and descent, maintaining climbing pace and acknowledging milestones – these are the points of departure for the choreographic work that engendered "Symbol of Ascent".
This work explores, from a critical perspective, the issue of struggle as a means of progressing – manual labor, sweat and physical force as tools in the realization and achievement of goals.

"Cold Feet" – premiere
Creator/Dancer : Daffi Altabeb
Dancer : Tal Kol
Every day. It has to be done every day. Put things in order. First the blouse and then on top of it, slowly, the pants.
I put the shoes in their place and roll the socks up into them. Stability. Good. There is something liberating about order. Otherwise chaos might erupt.

"Between the chairs"– premiere
Creator/Dancer : Tali Zabilevich
“Problems disappear when you set to work, like life and death … All you need is to be committed to your decision. You only find ideas and words while talking” (Eugene Ionesco).
Taking Eugene Ionesco’s cue, the struggle against loneliness fills the vacuum with human chairs.
“Fill, fill all the empty space with chairs, leave no room for doubt. Get rid of any remnant of loneliness.”

"Testimony" – premiere
Choreography : Odelia Cooperberg
Dancers : Naomi Kaplan, Ran Baron, Odelia Cooperberg
Costume design : Odelia Cooperberg
Original music : Idan Tirkel
The stage is the dancer’s private space, but when the audience is invited onto the stage gaps emerge in the fabric of theatrical intimacy. The dancer is exposed: “With a sense of ambivalence I open up to the thronging stranger, like an amputee on the street who shows his stump to a stranger in order to beg – he exposes his most intimate part, for … for what?”
The audience is witness to what occurs on the stage. Reactions are unexpected; the encounter is personal, embarrassing, both compelling and repulsive, seeking and proving.

"Traffic Reports" – premiere
Creators : Shlomit Fondaminsky, Yuval Fingerman
Concept : Vered Levi, Yuval Fingerman
Participants:
Omniscient Narrator : Yuval Fingerman
Character 1 : Shlomit Fondaminsky
Character 2 : Vered Levi
Character 3 : Diula Chakaver
The audience is given a glimpse of the world of 3 characters, mediated by the “omniscient narrator” – a radio announcer. At times this mediation is neutral, but at other times the mediator interferes, interprets or even disrupts. The characters exist here and now, outside time, in a space of their own. Will they win the audience’s love?

The process by which a text evolves from the written word to living, breathing movement.
A film that straddles the worlds of film, dance and theater, offering its own cruel interpretation of love and passion between man and woman. The dance that is performed on the stage is a continuation of the film, but adds a new dimension to what has been taking place.

"Take Off/Earth" – premiere
Creator/dancer : Noa Levi-Sapir
Costume design : Varda Levi
A solo performance by artist and dancer Noa Levi of the School of Visual Theater and the Academy of Music and Dance. A mythological figure from an unknown world travels a path of earth and wind, cyclicality and circularity, in a work influenced by Buto spiritual dance. The accompanying music combines Japanese flute and drum with African folk music. The dance starts from the ground and, after rising and moving on, returns to it.

The Israeli Breakdance Organization
Breakdance is a form of dance that developed on the American street and spread across the world. The courtyard dancing that accompanies the performances offers a glimpse of the “street” itself, a “popular” dance experience.
Dance, internal rhythm, are in each of us. In the courtyard, with no barriers, one may ask: How do you get people to get up and dance?
